2/18/10: Tommy Wiseau, The Interview

Article by
Marie "I did not hit her" Sarkisian

Last night we had the acclaimed writer/actor/director/producer of The Room, Tommy Wiseau. Tommy was good enough to spend about 30 minutes on the phone with us to discuss his approach to creating The Room and to talk about other projects he's currently working on like the TV show The Neighbors and the documentary Homeless in America.

I could really tell Tommy's passion for acting and films in general
as he tells us about his inspirations and influences. He has always
been interested in film he says, but some may not have known his love
for music and watching sports. In last night's interview, we discussed
both and even asked him if he would consider making another movie about
a musician/football player. His response was optimistic - [you never
know].

Tommy is currently working hard to get The Neighbors off the ground. Here is the trailer to the TV show: theneighborssitcom.com.
He told us he is open to work with anyone and is still looking for a TV
station to pick it up, even offering to do some work with HippoJuice!
We were absolutely honored to hear that.

Giving advice to young film makers, he explained his process and how
he recommends everyone approach such a daunting task - to take it in
little increments at a time. He told us to think about it in terms or
working in 20%'s until you reach 100%. Well said, Tommy. I'm sure we
can all take a page out of your book.

You can listen to the entire podcast on the Livestream.com replay from 2/17/2010. Just go to our podcast page to find our archives.
Hippojuice Interview with Tommy Wiseau Q&A

Tommy Wiseau's written answers to the HippoJuice interview questions:

1. General introduction (Where are you from, how did you get into film, what are you currently working on)

My name is Tommy Wiseau, an American actor,
director. At this time I’m working on “The Neighbors” a sitcom, and I’m
open to any TV network, which can work with me. Also I’m working on a
vampire movie, and other projects.

2. Did you intend "The Room" to be a dark comedy from the
beginning, or did you decide to call it a dark comedy after the film
was done?

You must understand first the aspect about “The
Room” and my approach to my creation. The more colors you have the
better your project would be.

3. "The Room" reportedly cost $6 Million, how much did it earn?

First, if you work hard you can do anything. Second, I don’t like to talk about money.

4. How did you get your movie funded?

Again, I already answer your question. ( the answer above)

5. Do you embrace or hate the fact that your movie "the Room" is loved because it is Quote "So bad it's good"?

You can laugh, you can cry, you can express yourself, but please don’t hurt each other.

6. How long did you start physically training for your role in "The Room"?

First “The Room” is my twelve (12) year of my work. What do you mean physically?

7. What is your advice for young/starting out film makers?

Don’t think about 100%; first you must have 20% of
your project, and 40% etc. then you might reach 100% of your project.
This simple formula can be apply to your school, and other aspect in
your life.

OK, we're evil.

We spent nine minutes shooting John with a paint ball gun last night. Why? Well, it was kind of John's idea. He was asking for it.

You see, John recently started playing paint ball, and he was bragging about this and that and saying how awesome it is shooting at kids and 40-year-old virgins. And of course, there always comes the challenge in there. We ask "how much does it hurt?" and then it turns into this.

But to be fair, we did as for donations. John didn't put his body though that amount of pain for nothing. Listeners raised enough money for us to buy a new flip camera (so we will start posting more YouTube videos of show happenings) and a new audio mixer, which we desperately needed. So, if you think about it, John's a martyr.

So yes, we did shoot John multiple times in the chest, crotch, and butt repeatedly while he told bad jokes. But it was for the good of the show. And I like to think that every ball that didn't break when hitting his skin is just a little reminder of all the fun we had.

Three more days until Christmas! (Or is it two? Do you count the
current day? Even if it's early in the morning?) If I wake up 3 more
times, it will be Christmas morning. (There!)

Everyone may be tight on money this year, but we certainly aren't
tight on holiday cheer! I fount it rather difficult to get "into the
holiday spirit" last 2 years, being in South Florida in my own
apartment. Yes, I threw small holiday parties for my friends, but it
didn't feel official. But there's something about this year.

Maybe it's the trip Royce and I took to New York this December. It
was chilly, we got to see the Rockefeller Center tree, and enjoyed a
Christmas party at Big Kev's house.

Maybe I'm in the Christmas spirit because I got picked to be on the
holiday party planning committee at work. We did throw one kickass
Mexican Christmas party this year, which mariachis and margaritas and
everything!

Maybe it was the Secret Santas? Or the decorations? Or the blizzard
that just blew through? I've been enjoying seeing the before and after
pictures and videos people have been tweeting and posting.

Or maybe it's just because I'm listening to old-timey Christmas
songs on my XM channel 4? Whatever it was that put me into the mood,
I'm grateful for it. This has been one HECK of a December.

What a fantastic exit to the 00's decade.

Happy Holidays everyone,

Article by
Marie "Tired of seeing Viggo's butt" Sarkisian

I went to see The Road last night because I thought the world was too happy and wanted a reality check.

Leaving the theater with my shirt wet from crying and afraid I'd
never smile again, I couldn't deny the raw power of this movie. I
cannot remember the last movie I saw that made me FEEL like this. It
was awful and awesome at the same time.

The Road is based off the novel by Cormac McCarthy. It is a post
apocalyptic story set years after an unknown disaster (we assumed it to
be bombs and then a series of natural disasters) and people are
cannibalistic due to the lack of food. Plants no longer grow, animals
have died off, and only homeless humans are left to either die, hunt,
or run. The movie is terribly suspenseful where even the very few light
moments are pretty crappy. There is just NO HOPE left for this father
and son combo. The only thing these two live for is to make it to the
east coast, and then keep moving south in the hopes they might find
warmth or food.

Again, Viggo Mortensen
dives head into the role of "The Man" (as you never hear him being
called anything else but 'Papa' by his son) by losing a ton of weight
and stripping down to nothing a few times so we all know how skinny he
got. I think after Eastern Promises he had nothing to be modest about his nudity.

Visually I think this movie was 100% on par what it should have
looked like at the end of the earth. It was bleak, cold, snowy/rainy,
and downright depressing. It wasn't over the top with blizzards or
tidal waves, though it did have the occasional storm, fire, or
earthquake to shake you up a little. As they walked through deserted
streets and abandoned homes, I did expect to see a zombie pop out.
Luckily, all they had to worry about was smarter, desperately alive
humans who developed a taste for other humans and also had guns and
knives. No sweat.

Props go to Kodi Smit-McPhee
for his role as The Boy. Getting a good child actor is always
important, but he was pretty much the only other actor in the movie
besides Viggo and occasionally Charlize Theron
or a stray person. There was no music or graphics to really beef up a
drab role, the movie was nearly all acting. It kind of had a Cast Away / I Am Legend quality to it.

And although I understand why Charlize Theron did what she did, she was still a bitch.

As far and acting and visuals go, this movie is definitely oscar
worthy. Just don't go into it thinking it's going to be a feel-good
movie.

Also, even though dysfunctional families have been done over and over again, this is an original concept of putting all sorts of people into one family. Also, the show has Ed O'Neill, who was the king of the dysfunctional family as Al Bundy in Married With Children.

As the winner, let me play for you my favorite clip from the show, and what made me fall in love with it.
